The teaching of botany at Pavia began in 1546 as part of medical studies as a "simple reading" ie as a description of the plants used as components of pharmaceutical prescriptions. It 'probably existed since 1520 in Pavia, at the home of Leonard Read, a garden with collection of medicinal plants.
The Botanical Garden of Pavia is the present location of the last decades of the 1700s, after a complex sequence of attempts to find a home suitable for agriculture and simple teaching of the medical faculty. Thank Witman was established in 1773 to its present location, the Garden
botanist.
In 1777, when he assumed the direction of Giovanni Antonio Scopoli (1777-1788), the Botanical Gardens had a very similar structure the current one, especially for buildings and the perimeter.
He enriched the collections with the exchange of seeds and plants, and promoted the restoration of the greenhouses already mentioned, those of Scopoli, making replacing wooden structures with stone ones. It also increases the facilities for the cultivation of plants by "pulvilli" serviceable with glass, still existing today.
Since 1997 the Botanical Garden is part of Department of Environment, Land and Environment , which is merged with the Institute of Botany. From that date begins the direction of Alberto Balduzzi (1997-2002) during which the foundations were laid of a collection of medicinal plants. In addition have been carried out important restoration maintenance. The current director is Francesco Sartori.
